Greater Cleveland Chess was founded by Bob Scaccia. Noting the available technology to improve the over the board chess experience, plus the fantastic award for the mind and life skills that chess provides, he decided to invest his own capital in creating a full scale chess center. With the communities support we will be able to thrive and bring top grade chess to Cleveland.
Greater Cleveland Chess & Center, an affiliate of The Chess Guild, is a beautiful modern facility with it's own center that holds rooms for large tournaments, classes, game review, a library, lectures, food & drink, a lounge and places to watch live or streamed games. Some of these services are in the works and others already available.
Beyond these doors is over 1,200 square feet of space to be used by our members. Think of it like a country club for chess players. Within this space is a lounge, a kitchen with food/drinks, a lounge, places to review games, and monitors to review past games or watch live tournaments either at the club or anywhere in the world.
Chess helps focus the mind by forcing you to concentrate, think logically, consequentially and intelligently. Chess is life you will hear people say. Learn the pitfalls of poorly executed plans, greedy play, being too aggressive, or too passive. Learn how to interact socially with fellow chess players. Shake hands, review the game after. Learn how to explain your decisions to others.
Leave everything at home. We provide best in class equipment. DGT boards, clocks, pieces. Our top 5 tables (building more!) have been designed especially for you by a master craftsmen known for wood horse carousels. Notice how these boards, used by the worlds top players, are inset into the table and how the table has plenty of room for your scoresheets. We have more tables on order and soon will have enough for 20 players at any given time to play on.
4,000 Square Feet of space. We are continuing our journey to one of the top clubs in the country. We have our own tournament hall (see above), R&R room with a sectional, monitor to watch your kids play, and some boards setup. We have a game review room with boards, a kitchen with healthy food, drinks, healthy caffeine like coffee and espresso available for members. A training room and coaching rooms. More to come as we build out our full membership offering.
16 Smart DGT Chess Sets*. This allows for 32 players to have their games recorded and stored for review and analysis from home. All connected to a computer for storage. Games are uploaded to the home page using ChessBase*. These uploads include engine analysis, and ability to download the games to your computer and upload them to your favorite chess study software program.
* We are resellers of these products.
We try and start our tournaments early so you can get your kids home at a reasonable time. Only players and their friends/family are allowed in the center. No surprise visitors. We expect our players and members to be role models to the kids in our club. The outside doors are locked when they are here just like at school. Inside the member area, room doors are removed, and we know who is at the club at all times. Our staff is constantly watching to make sure your kids are safe. We love our kids too and know you need a safe, secure, clean and healthy environment.
Stay tuned to great things that are coming. Chess games of our own creation for kids and adults on Casual Thursdays. We already have included blitz tournaments, weekly quads and starting in April, a monthly Saturday all day Swiss tournament with big cash prizes. Our first class is about to be launched and led by a Fide Master. We're looking at launching competitions that include first responders, seniors, all lady tournaments and much more.
Have a question about our products, or about how we can match your specific needs? If you have a close deadline or a special request, ask us. Send us a message, and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

Tournament players are expected to attach the greatest importance to fair play and good sportsmanship. In the event of any concerns, do not hesitate to contact the Tournament Director.
All tournaments, unless otherwise advertised, follow standard rules per the U.S. Chess Federation's Official Rules of Chess. (Tournaments that involve being FIDE rated operate under the FIDE Laws of Chess.)
Our Tournament Directors are all certified by the US Chess Federation. Some are additionally certified to run FIDE events. We aim to run our tournaments with the highest level of ethics and integrity. In matters not explicitly covered by the applicable rules, Directors will use their best discretion and judgment, in consultation with G4C (Greater Cleveland Chess Club & Center) leadership where appropriate.
Byes and Withdrawals
All requests for byes must be made when registering for a tournament or via text message or phone call to (330) 603-7839 at least one hour in advance of the start of the round. Text messages are accepted via a confirmation text message reply.
If you need to withdraw from a tournament before it begins, you will receive a full refund if the request is made prior to 24 hours before the start of the tournament. Refunds for any requests within the 24 hour period leading to the start of the round will be reduced by 50%.
Cancelling a Bye Request
Per USCF rule 22C5: If the director agrees, a player may cancel an irrevocable half-point bye under the condition that if the player wins, the result will be treated as a draw for prize purposes.
The TD has the discretion to accept or deny a request to cancel a bye without providing an explanation.
Cell Phones & Devices
USCF rule 20N states: Without permission of the Arbiter/TD a player is forbidden to have a mobile phone or other electronic means of communication in the playing venue, unless they are completely switched off.
For FIDE events: The penalty for a phone ringing or otherwise disturbing play is the immediate loss of the game.
For USCF events (that are not FIDE rated): A warning and a time penalty will be issued for a first offense. A second offense will result in the immediate loss of the game.
The TD may request that a player leaves his or her device(s) in the club office for the duration of an event. If the player refuses, the TD has the right to withdraw the player from the remainder of the tournament without a refund.
Forfeits
Penalty for forfeit of games is the higher of the entry fee of the event or $25, payable before registration to another event. Repeat offenders will lose tournament privileges! If we are unable to rate an event due to an expired USCF membership, a $25 penalty will also apply.
Disputes & Errors
If there is a dispute, players should pause their clock and get the TD immediately.
Players should report errors with recorded results, or other issues, by email to julie@greaterclevelandchess.org.
Disruption of Games
USCF rule 20N1 states that the TD has the right to impose penalties on players and non-participating spectators who are disturbing play.
After a noise warning has been issued, the TD reserves the right to eject any player or non-participating spectator (i.e. a club member or guest) from the tournament (without a refund) and from the club premises.
Repeat offenders may be subject to a suspension from the club.
Guests
The Greater Cleveland Chess Club & Center is a private club. Use of our facility is at the discretion of organizer or tournament director.
First time visitors, parents and/or guardians of scholastic members (under age 18) are permitted to accompany their child to the club and invited to stay in the designate areas for non-players.
Only paying players, organizers, or tournament directors are allowed in the playing area 5 minutes before clocks are started until the tournament is completed.
Hygiene
Players are expected to conform to normal grooming standards and to be free of body odors.
Notation Rules
Players are expected to follow all scorekeeping rules. In events with a 30 second increment, scoresheets need to up-to-date at all times.
Per USCF rule 15C, in games without an increment players may stop notating once either players clock goes below 5 minutes.
Per FIDE laws, players do NOT have to notate in FIDE rated rapid events.
Tournament Equipment
The club provides players chess sets, clocks, scoresheets, and pencils. Only the provided sets, and clocks are allowed to be used in tournament play.
